23
Attachment 6
Top 10 Natural and Cultural Sites in Orange County
To help mark the 10~' Anniversary of the Lands Legacy Program, DEAPR proposes
embarking on a public outreach effort to identify The Top 14 Natural and Cultural Sites in
Orange County. The purpose is to promote land conservation by helping people recognize
some of the special places we have here in Orange County-places that are truly unique and
that help give the county its identity.
DEAPR would utilize newspapers and other popular forms of social media (e.g., Facebook
and Twitter) to generate interest in its search. It would also ask its advisory boards
(Commission for the Environment, Historic Preservation Commission, Agricultural
Preservation Board, and Parks and Recreation Council) to participate by submitting
recommendations and helping with the public outreach.
What would you put on the list?
The following are some initial candidates that DEAPR staff is considering (in no order). We
know there are many more candidates out there and look forward to learning about them.
- Occoneechee Mountain
- Eno River State Park
- Duke Forest
- Mason Farm Biological Reserve
- Davie Poplar at McCorkle Place
- University Lake
- Occoneechee Village archaeological site (at Eno bend)
- Cedar Grove Historic District
- Ayr Mount
- New Hope Creek Slopes (including Hollow Rock heritage area)
- Cane Creek Reservoir
- The Forest Theater
- Moorefields and adjoining Seven Mile Creek natural area
- Pickard Mountain/Dairyland agricultural corridor
- St. Mary's Road Corridor
Staff received favorable feedback from the Board of Commissioners at its
October 2010 work session.
