Horace Johnson, Mayor of Hillsborough, stated that his understanding is that the cost would
be around $38.00 per ton. He asked if they plan to be around in 20 years and Mr. McDonald said that they
have a 25 year contract with CP&L and DuPont. There are still incentives to reduce waste because the
County would only pay for what goes into the transfer station. He said that the nonprocessed materials goes
to the BFI landfill in Sampson. Their capacity is 2,000 tons a day and they usually take 40 tons a day.
Mr. McDonald answered questions about disposable diapers and mattresses and sofas. They now
have a shredder they put these items through and then process them through the plant the same as other
waste. He explained the process and how it operated.
ADJOURNMENT
With no further discussion to be heard, Chair Carey adjourned the meeting. The next regular
meeting will be held on August 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the courtroom of the Old Courthouse in Hillsborough, North
Carolina.
Moses Carey, Jr., Chair
Beverly A. Blythe, Clerk
