RESOLUTION <br />INTERNATIONAL DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE <br />WHEREAS, April 4 is the anniversary of the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the great world leader and <br />the best known American to use active nonviolence to oppose oppression, and <br />WHEREAS, violence of all kinds - between family members, in schools, on the streets, at businesses - is <br />causing major disruptions in the social fabric leading to fear and distrust, and <br />WHEREAS, violence in other nations whether terrorist or armed conflict is causing widespread loss of life and <br />destruction of property and is directly involving American armed forces and civilians, and <br />WHEREAS Orange County has taken a leadership role in North Carolina in its efforts to curb violence, <br />establishing conflict resolution and many other efforts to resolve conflicts and maintain a civil and <br />compassionate community, <br />THEREFORE, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners joins other communities throughout the <br />United States and other nations in declaring April 4, 1996 as a "Day without Violence" and calls on the <br />citizens of the county to redouble efforts, in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other great spiritual <br />and political leaders devoted to nonviolence, to remove the causes of violence in our community and seek <br />ways to join others in our state and nation to restore civility to our families, relationships and communities. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />VI.
