These <br />volunteers are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and are trained by paid <br />ombudsmen, who also provide the volunteers with ongoing technical assistance and <br />educational support for their activities that include: <br />• Apprising themselves of general conditions under which residents of long -term <br />care facilities are living <br />• Assisting residents or family member with grievance resolution regarding <br />residents' rights issues by referring them to the Ombudsman <br />• Making official quarterly visits to each nursing home <br />• Preparing reports as required by the North Carolina Division of Aging, citing <br />specifically observed concerns and generally held long -term care issues <br />• Serving as a nucleus for increased community involvement in the facilities <br />• Promoting community education and awareness of the needs of residents in <br />long -term care facilities <br />• Working toward keeping the public informed about aspects of long -term care and <br />the operations of nursing homes in their county <br />
