What are your Board /Commission's most important accomplishments? <br />1. Developed and presented recommendations on safeguards for the Secure Communities <br />Program in Orange County. <br />2. Developed, presented, and assisted the Board of County Commissioners in adopting the <br />Social Justice Goal. <br />3. Sponsored and organized a Panel Discussion: "Health Care Disparity and Housing: What <br />does it mean to you" <br />4. Sponsored and organized the Pauli Murray Awards Ceremony — a local adult, business, and <br />young person were recognized for their efforts to promote equality for and respect of all <br />people. Additionally, three (3) students from middle and high schools were acknowledged <br />for essays written regarding bullying. <br />5. Responded to local Chapel Hill resident's request- for - assistance regarding a proposed Citizen <br />Review Board for the Town of Chapel Hill. This request was prompted by an allegation of <br />racial profiling. <br />6. Five (5) members received mandatory training to serve on the 3- member Review Panel to <br />hear challenges to "Director's Decision" regarding an allegation of housing discrimination. <br />7. Three trained Commission members heard one challenge to a "Director's Decision" regarding <br />an allegation of housing discrimination. <br />List of Specific Tasks, Events, or Functions Performed or Sponsored Annually. <br />Provide proclamation that proclaims Human Rights Week, Human Rights Day, and the Bill <br />of Rights Day in Orange County. <br />Organized and sponsored the annual Human Relations Month Kick -Off to acknowledge <br />February as Human Relations Month. Provide resolutions that acknowledge February as "Human <br />Relations Month" for adoption by the governing bodies of the County and the local <br />municipalities; and plan various events during the month of February to acknowledge "Human <br />Relations Month." <br />Organized and sponsored the annual Pauli Murray Award Ceremony during which a local <br />adult, business, and young person were recognized for their efforts to promote equality for and <br />respect of all people. Additionally, three (3) students from middle and high schools were <br />recognized for essays written regarding bullying. <br />Respond to residents' requests for feedback/support regarding various social justice issues. <br />Study and make recommendations to the BoCC regarding social justice issues. <br />Describe this board /commission's activities /accomplishments in carrying out <br />BOCC goal(s) /priorities, if applicable. <br />Goal One: Ensure a community network of basic human services and <br />infrastructure that maintains, protects and promotes the wellbeing of all <br />County residents. <br />The developed and presented recommendations on safeguards for the Secure Communities <br />Program in Orange County protect all County residents from differential treatment by law <br />enforcement. (December 2009; January 2010 BoCC Retreat) <br />The developed, presented, and BoCC- adopted goals of the Social Justice Goal maintains, <br />protects, and promotes the wellbeing of all County residents.
