Orange County NC Website
Orange County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board
o We have teamed up with State Alcohol Law Enforcement personnel to
train point -of -sale employees to detect fake identification documents.
We also purchased electronic equipment to aid our employees in this
endeavor (used in our high volumn stores primarily).
o We collected and paid -out over $3.2
related to gross sales in last fiscal year.
• State Excise and sales taxes
• Mixed Beverage
• Rehabilitation
Total taxes based on gross sales
million in total taxes which were
$ 2,822.7k
$ 346.7k
$ 42.5k
$ 3,211.9k
o We purchased and up- fitted a new ABC store in Hillsborough to improve the
shopping experience of our Northern Orange customers (and to keep the money in
our county). This store also serves as the northern - Orange LBD distribution point.
o We linked into the State ABC website to provide the most up -to -date information
to potential customers.
o The budgeted distributions of net profit for the current fiscal year (FYI 0/11) will
be over $642k (broken down as $100k for alcohol education and rehabilitation,
$142.2k for alcohol law enforcement and $400k for the Orange County General
Fund, and $63.7k for retiree employee health care plan expenses.
Challenges: The biggest challenge we face currently is the potential privatization of
the entire state ABC system. We remain disappointed in the behavior and actions of a
few ABC boards. We are committed to provide a positive shopping experience for
our customers in Orange County. We are also committed to the legal sale of alcohol
and the control the current system provides in this regard.
Activities in Progress:
o We consider the care and upkeep of our retail stores a major issue. We remain
interested in ownership versus leasing of our stores. We have operated stores
in Chapel Hill /Carrboro since 1959; however, we own only one facility there.
Several leases will expire in 2013 and we are continuing our effort to find
suitable land on which to build or to purchase an already existing facility and
up -fit it to our unique needs.
o We have completed the rehabilitation of three of our owned stores in Northern
Orange County to create a better shopping environment and to preserve the
properties for the future.
Page 3 of 6 pages
