4
Orange County Department of
Environment, Agriculture, Parks &~ Recreation
Natural ~- Cultural Resources Division
306-A Revere Road / PO Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Phone: (919) 24S-2517, Fax: (919) 644-3351
Seven Mile Creek Preserve
MEMORANDUM
TO: Donna Baker, Clerk to the Board of Commissioners
FROM: David Stancil, Director, Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks & Recreation
DATE: December 10, 2010
SUBJECT: Recommendation for Appointment to the Historic Preservation Commission
Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation staff has received the attached
application from Rob Golan for the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The Historic
Preservation Commission participates in the Certified Local Government program. All HPC
members must have personal, professional, and/or organization experience related to historic
preservation. Examples of appropriate professions include: architect, historian, architectural
historian, archaeologist, landscape architect, planner, anthropologist, curator, conservationist,
or folklorist, or other activities that are related to historic preservation. Members must also
reside in Orange County's planning jurisdiction.
Several other applicants have applied for the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission,
but Mr. Golan is the only applicant who meets both the experience requirement of the CLG
program and the residency requirement for Orange County. Mr. Golan knowledge in local
history, historic buildings and related artifacts, and his previous experience on the HPC will lead
to a more well-rounded preservation board. Mr. Golan would fill the seat of Len Vogel, who
resigned in November when he moved out of the county.
Historic Preservation staff has been in contact with Mr. Golan, he attended the HPC's December
meeting and is interested in serving on the commission. Please convey this to the Board of
County Commissioners for their consideration in January.
Thank you.
