MOSES CAREY, JR., CHA/R ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
BARRY.IACOBS, V/CE CHA/R
VALER/E P. FOUSHEE POST OFFICE BOX 8181
ALICE M. GORDON 200 SOUTH CAMERON STREET
STEPHEN H. HALK/OT/S
HILLSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA 27278
September 8, 2005
National Endowment for the Humanities
1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20506
SUBJECT: Trading Path Association Grant Proposal
To Whom It May Concern:
~~_~%
This letter is to express support for a proposal by the Trading Path Association (TPA) to engage
a team of consultants in a project to assess the education and heritage tourism value of different
sites, including one promising location in Orange County, North Carolina.
The requested funds would enable the TPA to assess the potential use of the New Hope Creek
corridor for public educational and tourism activities. Orange County is working with its
neighboring jurisdictions to protect land along New Hope Creek for a planned greenway trail and
wildlife preserve. The proposed study would enhance that cooperative effort. The TPA proposal
also suggests the creation of athree-county consortium (Orange, Durham and Person counties) to
promote heritage tourism, and that venture also seems to be to Orange County's benefit.
Orange County appreciates the significant assistance that the National Endowment for the
Humanities provides each year to universities and other cultural institutions, including five NEH
grants awarded earlier this year to researchers and scholars at our University of North Carolina
(Chapel Hill) and a Landmark of American History Grant to support teacher workshops at our
historic Burwell School (Hillsborough).
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Moses Carey Jr., Chair
Orange County Board of Commissioners
www. co. orange.nc. us
Protecting and preserving -People, Resources, Quality of Life
Orange County, North Carolina -You Count!
(919) 245-2130 • FAX (919) 644-0246
