ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ~ ~ ~ _a 4U `S --~ `7~/~ <br />RESOLUTION HONORING ~p ''~` O S <br />TOMMY D. LEONARD / <br />a WHEREAS, in 1957, Tommy D. Leonard was discharged from the United States Army on <br />Sunday and began teaching for the Orange County School System on the following Monday; and <br />WHEREAS, Tommy D. Leonard assumed his duties as a Teacher of Agriculture at the old <br />Hillsborough High School and then on to Orange.High School; and <br />WHEREAS, he continued his teaching career until his retirement in 1987 and now has <br />announced that he plans to return to his birthplace in Lexington, North Carolina; and <br />WHEREAS, his teaching career was marked by countless hours of dedicated service to both <br />students, parents, and community; and <br />WHEREAS, he successfully transitioned through each and every yearly and sometimes monthly <br />redesign of the curriculum and teaching methodology by North Carolina Department of Public <br />Instruction (NCDP]); and <br />WHEREAS, Tommy D. Leonard always considered his students and their total development <br />first; and <br />WHEREAS, he was years ahead of the State of North Carolina in both the need to achieve <br />desired outcomes and the ultimate goal of creating responsible and good citizens; and <br />WHEREAS, he spent countless hours in activities with his students for which he never received <br />_~ any compensation, including escorting students to Future Farmers of America summer camp at <br />White Lake, North Carolina where he was ably assisted by his late wife, Nadine Leonard; and <br />WHEREAS, in the professional opinion of his former Orange High School Principal Stephen H. <br />Halkiotis, Tommy D. Leonard had achieved the status of Master Teacher long before NCDPI <br />attempted to define the concept; <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of County <br />Commissioners recognizes the valuable contributions made to students of the Orange County <br />Schools by Tommy D. Leonard and that his presence in Orange County since 1957 made it a <br />better place for all citizens for many years to come and thanks him for sharing his life in such a <br />positive and productive manner for the betterment of all people. <br />This the 7`~ day of June, 2005. <br /> <br />• Moses Carey, Jr., Chair <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
