Draft Report Executive Summary Karen Lincoln, 245--2580
2. Powerpoint Handout Craig Benedict, 245-2592
3. Peripheral Issues of Hwy 54 and 1-40
Interchange and the Regional Transit
Light Rail Alternative
PURPOSE: To receive a presentation on the draft NC 541 1-40 Corridor Study from Durham-
Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning organization staff.
BACKGROUND: The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro (DCHC) Metropolitan Planning
Organization (MPO) Transportation Advisory Committee JAC) has released the draft NC 541 1-
40 corridor Study report for local government and public review. The DCHC MPO initiated the
study to identify transportation and land use strategies for accommodating current and future
transportation needs in the corridor.
The NC 54 corridor serves as one of the major gateways between Chapel Hill and southwest
Durham and western Wake County. Its interchange with 1-40 has consistently ranked as the top
congested location in the region. Development pressures within the corridor coupled with
mobility and capacity issues have highlighted the concern that the existing and planned
transportation infrastructure in this area is insufficient to accommodate growth and to address
land use and transportation problems. Short and long-range solutions are needed to preserve
this important corridor.
Multi-modal transportation systems are an integral part of the overall strategy recommended by
the study. Complementing a `super street' design suggestion, a planned light rail system, a
network of premium Bus Rapid Transit lines, expanded local bus service, and additional park-
and-ride lots are recommended for the corridor.
See Attachment 3 for the Peripheral Issues of Hwy 54 and 1-40 Interchange and the Regional
Transit Light Rail Alternative.
The Board may want to consider directing staff to submit comments regarding the NC 541 1-40
Corridor Study to the DCHC M PO.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no immediate financial impact to the County.
Recommendations from the study may be incorporated in the Regional Transit Plan and
