Alternate Tower Consider» ins
Piedmont Electric Membership Corp
ALTERNATE TOWER CONSIDERATIONS — ORANGE COUNTY
Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation (PEMC) is planning to implement a VHF
trunked radio system to provide coverage for the PEMC service area. The tnmked radio
system is to replace an existing VHF conventional radio system.
PEMC requires a radio system that will optimize existing frequency spectrum and
provide increased voice channel capacity and data functionality. This will require the
installation of three (3) new towers. The radio system will consist of a VHF h unked
repeater equipment, VHF top antenna, transmission line for the VHF radio system, and
microwave dishes to interconnect the three tower sites. It should be noted that the
installation of the microwave system is critical to the functionality of the franked radio
system.
One of the towers is a proposed 350 -foot self - supporting tower to be installed in
Hillsborough, North Carolina. The other two towers are located in Person and Caswell
Counties and have already had their permits approved by the appropriate County
Planning Boards.
As part of the Orange County ordinance process, a search was completed to determine if
other tower sites within a 2 -mile radius of the PEMC Hillsbrough site would meet the
requirements for the PEMC radio system. A comparison of the tower data for these sites
as well as the data for the proposed 350 -foot PEMC tower is listed below.
Tower
Ground
Tower Height
Available
Tower type
Elevation (feet)
(feet)
Antenna Height
feet
Proposed
698
350
350
Self- support
PEMC Tower
American
635
235
200 or less
Guyed
Tower
Crown Piney
629
157
120 or less
Monopole
Grove
Crown
671
178
110 or less
Monopole
Hillsbrough
Global Signal
640
160
150 or less
Monopole
Laws Site
Prepared by:
Alexander Utility Engineering, Inc. 6/28/2006 Page 1 of 3
111
