PAGE 3 <br />WHEREAS, the month of October has been designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month in <br />North Catalina by Governor Martin to focus public attention on the plight of women who ire-.. -~... <br />being battered, and _ <br />WHEREAS, historically and presently women and children have been and are the victims of ~r.'~ <br />violence in their homes, and <br />WHEREAS, the .tragedy of domestic violence affects many women and children in the county of. <br />Orange who need the support and assistance of our community, and <br />WHEREAS, domestic violence must not be tolerated in any of its many forms by a community <br />that values freedom and civil liberties for all its members, <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Gommissioners pledge their support to <br />community efforts to end violence against women and urge all citizens to join together and <br />act on the belief that domestic violence is a crime that must not be tolerated in oux <br />community. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS. <br />E. REPORTS <br />1. ORANGE COUNTY LITERACY COUNCIL (A copy of the report is in the permanent agenda <br />file in the Clerk's Offa.ce) <br />Susan Attermeier, Chair and Joyce Taggart the Director of the Gouncil presented the <br />report. In summary, the Council is an all volunteers organization except for one and one <br />half paid staff members. Their goal is to reduce the overall incidence of functional <br />illiteracy in the adult population of Orange County which is estimated to be 25~. Joyce <br />Taggart described the outreach efforts of the organization in northern Orange County. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis suggested contacting the cable TV companies in the area who <br />may be willing to run public service announcements in an effort to locate people who can't .. <br />:read . <br />The main problem the Council has is finding the students. Commissioner Halkiotis "~ <br />offered to put the Gouncil in contact with some resource people who may be able to help A~ <br />in this endeavor. <br />F. ITEMS FOR DECISION = CONSENT AGENDA <br />Motion was made by Commissioner Hartwell, seconded by Commissioner Marshall to <br />approve the items on the Consent Agenda as listed below: <br />1. BID AWARD FOR MICROCOMPUTERS AND ASSOCIATED E UIPMENT <br />To award the bid for computer hardware to Gomputer Directions and the bid for <br />software to the respective low bidders as shown on bid sheet #144 attached to these <br />minutes_ <br />2. PROFESSIONAL SERVICE CONTRACTS FOR THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT <br />To approve and authorize the Chaix to sign the agreement between the Orange County <br />Health Department and the University of North Carolina for its School of Dentistry and the <br />agreement between the Orange County Health Department Ambulatory Gare Dental Service and <br />the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry for its Department of <br />Dental Ecology, pending positive review by the County Attorney and the Director of <br />Purchasing. <br />3. RENCHER STREET CDBG AREA REGULATORY APPROVAL <br />To approve and authorize the Chair to sign the necessary agreements and <br />applications necessary to receive the appropriate state regulatory review of the public <br />facility improvements design plans for the Rencher Street Area. <br />
