_'~ ^ y <br />to adopt the resolution as stated below commending Dasha Jackson for her achievement <br />as the Elks Club National Oratorical contest winner. <br />~~__: <br />RESOLUTION OF COM."iENDATION <br />WHEREAS, the Orange County Board of Commissioners wishes to recognize Dasha <br />Jackson as the winner of the Elks Club National Oratorical Gontest in Baltimore, <br />Maryland on August S and, <br />WHEREAS, Dasha Jackson pursued her quest for this National title by winning local, <br />distzict, regional and State contests and, <br />WHEREAS, her achievements provide an outstanding example of the motivation and <br />commitment to excellence manifested by Orange County youth now, <br />BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that Dasha Jackson is commended by the Orange County <br />Board of Commissioners for her excellent achievement as winnez of the Elks Glub <br />National Oratorical Contest and,1 r <br />BE IT FURTHER RE50LVED, that Dasha Jackson's community spirit .and individual <br />effort serves as an example far all the youth of Orange County. <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br />2. RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION _ TOM MA50N <br />A plaque was presented to Tom Mason from Commissioner Halkiotis an behalf of <br />the Sheriff's Department and a resolution of commendation was presented from Chairman <br />Carey on behalf of the Board of Commissioners. <br />Motion was made by Commissioner Hartwell, seconded by Commissioner Halkiotis <br />to adopt the resolution as stated below commending Tom Mason for his heroic rescue of <br />two people. <br />RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION <br />WHEREAS, on the afternoon of August 26, 19$9 Dr, and Mrs. Paul Brandis were <br />turning around on a dirt road off of Hatch Road when Dr. Brandis suffered a heart <br />attack which caused his vehicle to accelerate backwards into a large pond. <br />WHEREAS, a passing motorist, Thomas Masan, saw the car sinking in the pond, <br />realized the motorists were in immediate danger, and stopped to render aid by diving <br />in the pond. , <br />WHEREAS, Orange County Sheriff Deputy Jim Nida and Teddy Howard momentarily <br />arrived on the scene and joined Mason in the water. •Mr. Mason freed bath persons from <br />the car and handed them up to Deputy Nida and Teddy Howard. <br />WHEREAS, First aid was then given to Dr. and Mrs. Brandis by a nurse who passed by <br />the scene until the arrival of the South Orange Rescue Squad. <br />WHEREAS, an onlooker at the scene commented. "Both those people would have been <br />dead if it hadn't been far those guys who jumped in the water. <br /> <br />=, <br />`;.; <br />BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that Thomas Mason be recognized by the Orange County <br />
