Goa13: All adult school-based personnel will be aware of local cessation services and
resources such as quitlines and web-based services. Smoke-free adult personnel will
strengthen the OCS and CHCCS district's 100% TFS policies by acting as smoke-free role
models for students.
Local Objective: By June 2009, all OCS and CHCSS school-based personnel will have
received materials promoting local, phone, and web-based cessation services. This will be
measured by a mailing records kept by school health coordinators.
Strategies: Cessation resources will be posted and available in teacher/staff break rooms as
well as distributed through district mailings.
Timeline: Resources will be provided to school health coordinators prior to the start of the
2005-2006 school year for posting prior to the start of classes. Resources and personnel
mailings will be refreshed each semester.
Focus Area 3: Eliminate youth exposure to secondhand smoke
Goal: The program will increase parent awareness of the harmful effects of secondhand
smoke on children.
Local Objective 1: By June 2009, all OCS and CHCCS elementary schools will have at
minimum two "Love Our Lungs" signs posted at every parent/guardian drop-off/pick-up
point on school property. This will be measured by an environmental inspection conducted
by the program coordinator and confirmed by the school principal.
Strategies: Signs will be purchased from the vendor used by Healthy Alamance and
distributed to OCS and CHCCS elementary schools with a principal letter describing their
proper display. Health coordinators will follow up with principals if barriers to their proper
display are detected.
Timeline: Signs will be distributed to schools by the end of the first semester of the 2005-
2006 school year and should be displayed by the first week of the second semester of that
year. Signs will be on display indefinitely.
Local Objective 2: By June 2009, TRU peer educators will have conducted a total of 24
secondhand smoke awareness outreach activities at parentlguardian drop-off/pick-up points
at all CHCCS and OCS elementary schools. This will be measured by the program
coordinator's entries into the iPTS system.
Strategies: 2-3 peer educators will conduct outreach during hours of drop-off or pick-up.
Peer educators will hand static cling "Love Our Lungs" window stickers and other awareness
materials to parents/guardians dropping off/picking up their children.
Timeline: Peer educators will start outreach during the second semester of the 2005-2006
school year. 4 elementary schools will be reached each semester during the grant period.
Goal: The program will increase the number of smoke-free family restaurants in Orange
County.
Local Objective 1: By June 2009, 100% of restaurants applying for a permit in Orange
County will receive an informational packet from the Environmental Health Services
Division (EHSD) of the OCHD communicating the advantages of opening smoke free. This
will be measured by EHSD records.
Strategies: This strategy has recently been implemented as part of the current program and
requires organizational institutionalization. The program coordinator will provide
informational packets to the EHSD on a monthly basis. EHSD records will monitor the
distribution of the packets to new restaurants.
11
