ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: August 17, 2010 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~ -Q <br />SUBJECT: Statement on the Impact of Human Trafficking and September 1, 2010 <br />Conference <br />DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT (S): <br />Conference Agenda <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Donna Baker, 245-2130 <br />Patricia Witt, Soroptimist International of <br />Raleigh, NC <br />PURPOSE: To receive a statement on the impact of human trafficking and information on a <br />September 1, 2010 regional conference on human trafficking. <br />BACKGROUND: Soroptimist International of Raleigh, NC (SI/Raleigh) is an international <br />service club for business and professional women committed to improving the lives of women <br />and girls locally and globally. Last September, the Triangle J Council of Governments' Board of <br />Delegates agreed to co-host a meeting of members to become aware and better prepared to <br />handle human trafficking in the region. SI/Raleigh is facilitating that session and is coordinating <br />efforts to raise awareness and to foster taking action on human trafficking. <br />Many communities around the world are dealing with the issue of human trafficking. <br />Approaches and tactics to deal with the issue vary in their effectiveness. SI/Raleigh's goal is to <br />address the specific issues and challenges in North Carolina by learning from the experiences <br />in other communities, researching best practices, adapting and implementing them for <br />communities across the region. <br />The Regional Conference "Stop Human Trafficking" will be held on Wednesday, September 1, <br />2010 starting at 8:30am at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, 2209 Fairview Road, in <br />Raleigh. <br />The desired outcomes of this conference are: <br />• Commitment to lead the region to incorporate policies proven effective in combating <br />human trafficking. <br />• Commitment to incorporate the necessary steps and processes for handling citizen calls <br />regarding human trafficking situations <br />
