Work Plan /Performance Measures
meeting site for activity.
Summary
Summary
Summary
3
A need exists in Orange County to deliver hot and nutritious meals daily to frail and disabled
homebound individuals who are unable to prepare meals for themselves, shop for groceries and /or
have someone who can prepare meals for them. According to the National Policy and Resource
Center on Nutrition and Aging, home delivered meals (Meals -on- Wheels) are associated with
decreased hospital stays and allow participants to remain in their homes. According to the Meals -on-
Wheels Director in southern Orange County, approximately 7o homebound residents of the total
estimated population of 60,000, receive Meals-on-Wheels service. In northern Orange County, the
Director of the Meals -on- Wheels program through Orange Congregations In Missions, (OCIM),
estimates 4o residents throughout the area receive home delivered meals. This service makes it
possible for recipients to receive nutritious meals, remain in their homes and delay assisted living.
The recipients also need the daily contact with a caring volunteer. In many cases this is the only
contact they receive with another human. Age and income of recipient do not limit this service. A
sliding scale based on income level is used to determine the amount individuals pay with a ceiling of
$3.00.
Page 39
