~35~
It seems as if mast of the interest in pursuing other uses, including
commercial development, is coming from a vocal and self interested
mi nnri ty within the Duke decision making process. I t i s alarming to us that
this pro-development minority comprises nearly one halt of of the
Community Concerns sub-committee of the Land Resource Committee. This
minority is pursuing n hidden and self-motivated agenda under the
pretense of serving as a conduit far community sentiment to he
heard. Such a restrictive conduit does not allow for citizen participation in
the decision making process. Consequently, this hearing may be the only
opportunity far citizens to have direct input in the decision concerning the
fate of Duke Forest.
As citizens of Orange County, private or corporate, we are all subject to
controls aver haw we choose to use our land. These controls are what makes
Orange County such a nice place to live. Without an organized scheme for
growth, development, and rural buffer, land use conflicts will arise.
Rezoning from the current R-t designation to the proposed P_I.Q.
zoning vrau]d not change Dute's ahility to use these lands 8s it
currently does. In this sense, rezoning would he taring nothing away
from Dute. 1t would ensure that we will s11 have a goad neighbor in Orange
County. ~, neighbor who vrill respect our desires as we would respect theirs.
Orange County has a duty to protect the Rural buffer Zane when 2,H00 acres
of land is placed in jeopardy. On behalf of Save Duke Forest, I urge the
Planning Cacnmission to proceed full speed ahead and to urge the
County Commissioners to rezone these lands Pram R-1 to P_[.D_
• Rovr>r 3 Boy X50 - $7I.LSBOYOUGH I~~ - 27Z?S - 414-732-1575
