~/ <br />~~~ <br />clean water, clear air and other elements of a safe and attractive <br />' environment. We expect our elected officials to insure that <br />industrial, commercial, agricultural and residential development does <br />not lower the quality of the environment. We support research by <br />public and private institutions into the causes and cures of <br />pollution. <br />We ask County and Municipal governments to identify and preserve <br />natural open spaces for scenic, educational and recreational <br />pleasure. We ask that County and Municipal governments set aside <br />natural habitats for the protection of wildlife and plant life." <br />The following resolution regarding Duke Forest lands was passed <br />unanimously at the Democratic convention in April 1988: <br />"Whereas Duke Forest is one of the country's <br />oldest outdoor laboratories and managed research forest; and <br />Whereas the forest is an important wildlife sanctuary, archaeological <br />and historic sites, a vital watershed and a buffer between <br />municipalities; and <br />Whereas there is significant pressure to develop this land; <br />Therefore, we call on the County and Municipal governing bodies to <br />request that Duke University preserve Duke Forest for research, <br />recreation and educational purposes." <br />_, Albert King, a member of the New Audition Society, spoke in full <br />support of the Public Interest District zoning for all Duke Forest <br />properties.' <br />Gerald Featherstone spoke representing Haw River Assembly, which was <br />formed in 1982 for the purpose of restoring the lands and the waters <br />of the Haw River Basin to the most elegant state possible and listed <br />the organization's goals: <br />1) wish to protect the aesthetics of the valley <br />2) wish to protect the lands along the Haw River <br />Valley <br />3) wish to upgrade water quality <br />4) wish to protect the wildlife along the Haw <br />River. <br />He noted that clean water is a very important issue and development <br />pressures are becoming greater on the Haw River. He encouraged the <br />concept of the Public Interest Districts and further encouraged that <br />present efforts be increased and maintained to protect water quality. <br />He asked that the Orange County Boards also encourage Durham and <br />Alamance Counties to do more for water quality protection and <br />control. <br />Martha Klopfer presented a prepared statement (attachment to these <br />minutes on pages~~). <br />Howard Loren, resident of Roxboro, spoke in favor of Public Interest, <br />
