Major topics of discussion and activities to date include: review and comparison of
theoretical high school space profiles developed by the State Department of Public Instruction with
the space profiles of the existing high schools in Orange County; a tour of East Chapel Hill High
School; energy efficiency considerations; and construction management considerations, including
review of the Unitary Systems Approach (USA) used for the construction of several schools in
Johnston County. The task force also adopted the attached resolution encouraging pursuit of local
legislation that would allow Orange County to employ the Unitary Systems Approach to school
construction, or some similar process. That approach was approved, on a limited, trial basis in 1997
local legislation for Johnston County.
Staff and task force members will provide a brief report on discussions to date, and respond to
questions the Boards may have.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Boards receive the report as
information.
