ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS 1
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Date: May 6,1998
Action Agenda
Item No ,~• C
Subject: Emergency Medical Services Week Proclamation
Department: Emergency Management
Attachment(s):
Proclamation
Public Hearing Yes [] No
Information Contact: Nick Waters
Extension Number:
Telephone Number:
Hillsborough
Chapel Hill
Mebane
Durham
3030
732-8181
968-4501
910-227-2031
688-7331
PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of May 17 through 23, 1998 as Emergency Medical
Services Week in Orange County.
BACKGROUND: Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. has proclaimed the week of May 17 -
23, 1998 as Emergency Medical Services Week in North Carolina, in recognition of
dedicated professionals that provide emergency services to the citizens of this state. The
Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in Orange County is a combination of
Telecommunicators, First Responders, Law Enforcement Officers, Pazamedics, Nurses,
Doctors, County staff and volunteers. The telecommunicators provide Emergency
Medical Dispatch pre-arrival instructions to citizens who access the 911 center. The First
Responders and Law Enforcement Officers usually arrive first on the scene and provide
basic life support as well as updating the situations to the responding Pazamedic, through
the Telecommunicators. The Pazamedics arrive on scene and provide advanced life
support treatment when necessazy. The Pazamedics function as an extension of the
emergency room physicians and begin treating the patients in the home to stabilize prior
to transporting to the emergency room for further treatment by physicians.
The Orange County Emergency Medical Services respond to approximately 8,00 calls
per year, and provide treatment and transportation to a hospital emergency department for
approximately 7,500 of these calls. Emergency Medical Services not only provide
response, but also education for the citizens and County staff in CPR and First Aid
Courses. EMS also does community outreach programs for civic groups, public schools,
day care facilities, and other community functions such as Hillsborough's "Hog Day".
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Boazd proclaim the
week of May 17 - 23, 1998 as Emergency Medical Services Week in Orange County, in
recognition of the many dedicated men and women that daily serve the citizens in times
of medical emergencies.
