I have also attached current photographs of the house and a vicinity map
showing the location of Chatwood.
Description and Summary of Changes. The description of Chatwood contained in the Registration
Form, dated June 1988, remains an accurate portrait of the site today. There has been one
significant change to the house since the form was completed. The Naile Johnson wing, an eazly
19th century house which was appended to the main house in 1938, included afull-width screen
porch. Today, the porch is enclosed, with full-length, twelve-over-twelve pane windows on the
south facade, three nine-over-nine pane windows on the west facade, and two nine-over-nine's and
an entrance door on the east facade. The windowed porch remains very much an open, light-
gathering space; therefore, it does not seriously alter the attributes of the 1938 addition.
The Chatwood estate is well-maintained by the current owners, who have consented to the HPC's
proposal to pursue landmark designation. Furthermore, the property is under restrictive covenants
with Preservation/NC.
I took forwazd to receiving your comments on this site as a proposed local historic landmazk.
Please feel free to call me at 732-8181, extension 2594.
/db
attachments
(~h~
