17 <br />AGENDA ITEM #5: ITEMS FOR DECISION <br />a. Recommendation on Adoption of Ordinances Designating Orange County <br />Historic Landmarks <br />Four (4) ordinances designating the following Orange County historic properties - <br />Bingham School, Chatwood, Moorefields, and Rigsbee's Rock House -were presented at <br />the Quarterly Public Hearing on May 26. The Board of Commissioners voted to return <br />the question of adoption of landmazk designation ordinances to the Historic Preservation <br />Commission for a final recommendation. <br />MOTION: Satterfield moved that the Historic Preservation Commission recommend <br />that the Boazd of Commissioners adopt of the four (4) ordinances <br />designating Bingham School, Chatwood, Moorefields, and Rigsbee's <br />Rock House as Orange County Historic Landmazks. Motion seconded by <br />Rich. <br />VOTE: Unanimous. <br />AGENDA ITEM #6: ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION <br />a. St. Mary's Road Corridor Preservation Planning Study <br />The Board of County Commissioners voted to accept the $4,000 CLG Survey and <br />Planning Grant for the St. Mary's Road Corridor Preservation Planning Study. Belk met <br />with representatives of the Research Laboratories of Archeology at UNC-Chapel Hill to <br />discuss the archeological component of the study. Patricia Samford participated in that <br />meeting, and has conducted some greliminary mapping of the original trading path area. <br />A long-range goal of a preservation planning study may be to retrace the route of the <br />Indian Trading Path. Belk mentioned that Joe Herbert, a doctoral candidate in <br />archeology, is preparing a scope of work for the archeological component of the study. <br />Satterfield mentioned a historic corridor study from Charleston, SC. She said that the <br />Southern Regional Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation may be a source <br />of information about this study. Allison asked about the possibility of Durham County's <br />participation in a Scenic Byways Designation for St Mary's Road. Belk stated that <br />Durham County recently obtained this designation for South Lowell Road in Durham <br />County, but it doesn't include their portion of St Mary's Road Allison mentioned that <br />the presen+atioa of farmland along St Mary's Road is vital to preserving the scenic <br />qualities of St Mary's Road He suggested that the Agricultural Districts Advisory <br />Board should be involved in the preservation planning study. <br />Belk briefed the HPC on recent discussions among the Board of Commissioners about <br />adopting a Comprehensive Resource Conservation Program.
