TM two options under consideration both involve donated sires, one on University owned land in <br />the vicinity of Chapel Hill High and Served Elementary, and the other in the planned Meadowmont <br />development near the Orange -Durham County line. <br />At a recent meeting of the County Commissioners, the County Manager and Commissioner Gordon <br />shared information discussed by the Schools and Land Use Council relating to the middle school siting <br />options. Additional background information about the two sites, including perceived pros and cons of <br />each site. was outlined in two recent memos (attached) from the Superintendent, and summarized in an <br />August 21 article Item the Raleigh News & Observer. The Board of Education is scheduled to consider <br />this topic again at their nett regular meeting on September 3. The Schools and Land Use Council's next <br />meeting is now planned for September 23. <br />The project budget for the new middle school construction under the County's 1998 -2008 CIP is $19.8 <br />million, with 518 million of the funding to be derived from the sale of bonds approved by Orange County <br />voters in November 1997. CHCCS officials have expressed concerns that depending on Ore siting choice <br />made, the middle school project budget may be insufficient as it does not include funding for all of the <br />site development costs that may be incurred. The $19.8 million project budget does provide for the <br />construction of middle school with the parameters approved by the Board of Commissioners in <br />November 1996 for middle school Cmumenion standards, if the cost of construction falls in a range of <br />
