Under Smm <br />regulations, a County providing Nat level of service must function under a Medical Dvecror at the <br />sponsor hospital. The Cowry EMS pmgmm receives medical direction dvough UNC Hospitals by Dr. <br />Greg Mears. <br />The role of the medical director has changed dwmatically in Ne past two years. The Medical Directoi s <br />responsibilities include: <br />• Providing twining monitoring, and protocok for Ne emetgrncy medical dispamh (EMD) progmm al <br />9-1-1. <br />• Performing quality assawnce reviews and approving telecommunicemrs for certification to perform <br />EMD. <br />• Esmblishing Ne level of pwctice for Ne first responders and Ne vawng requvements for Nem m <br />opemre ammmatic defibrillators. Each first responder must be amrually trained end tested in <br />defbNlation. <br />• Delennining the smmdard ofcare and appmpriMe treatmen[ pmmcols for Ne pawmedics. <br />Providing veining, skill proficiency and evaluariom of technician performance for the Imitial <br />Response Paramedics. <br />• Providing rn appmpriare number of assistant medical directors to azsure availability a[ all times. <br />• Serving az a consulmnt for Ne Paramedics in Ne Feld. on pariem care issues. <br />Meeting weekly wiN EMS stafito provide consultation and review of medical issues. <br />• Respondimg az needN m certain EMS calls, imluding cardiac, mass <asvalry, or vehicle pin-ins. <br />
