~.
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No S.q
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: September 1, 1998
SUBJECT: Proclamation - Habitat for Humanity Month
-------------------------------- -------------------------------
DEPARTMENT County Commissioners PUBLIC HEARING YES NO x
-------------------------------- -------------------------------
BUDGET ~,MENDMENT: _YES NO
ATTACHMENT(S): YES INFORMATION CONTACT
Margaret Brown, Chair BOCC
TELEPHONE NUMBER
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Mebane 227-2031
Durham 688-7331
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PURPOSE: To consider proclaiming October Habitat for Humanity Month.
BACKGROUND: Since 1987, Habitat of Orange County, in partnership with
various municipal, church, university, civic, and business groups has
been able to complete over 50 homes providing decent basic housing for
approximately 237 residents throughout Orange County. Habitat is
currently on track to complete at least another 50 homes in the next
five years. Habitat has publicly broken ground for the roads and
utilities for a new eleven home subdivision on Rogers Road in Chapel
Hill. They will begin construction in 1999. This proclamation will be
an important affirmation of our community's values as well as raise
awareness of the need for basic affordable housing in our community.
1
RECOMMENDATION: Proclaim October as Habitat for Humanity month and
authorize the Chair to sign-the proclamation.
