ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. Q- Q
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: October 6, 1998
SUBJECT: AMENDMENT TO COMMISSION FOR WOMEN'S BYLAWS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEPARTMENT: Human Rights and Relations PUBLIC HEARING: _ Yes XX No
BUDGET AMENDMENT NEEDED
Yes XX No
ATTACHMENT(S):
• Proposed Amendment
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Martha Oxenfeldt
Jacky Phillips
Co-Chairs Commission for Women
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough - 732 -8181
Chapel Hill - 967-9251
Durham - 688-7331
Mebane - 227-2031
PURPOSE: To expand the capability of the Commission to render services by
increasing the number of members from fifteen to twenty.
BACKGROUND: The existing bylaws limit the Commission to fifteen (15) members
and require that five members shall reside in Chapel Hill Township; three from
Hillsborough Township; and five from Bingham, Eno, Little River, Cheeks and Cedar
Grove Townships collectively. The remaining two positions shall be at-large. The
Commission presently has twelve (12) members who are working on several community-
wide projects. It is actively recruiting additional members. Foremost in its recruitment
strategy is to further diversify its membership racially and predicated upon national
origin. The Commission is also interested in being able to capitalize on the opportunity
to recommend applicants for appointment who possess the talents needed to advance the
cause of women, regazdless of their particulaz township residency. The Commission for
Women desires to increase the members from fifteen to twenty.
An enlargement of the Commission, and such enlargement being by at-large positions,
would greatly enhance the potential for the Commission to broaden the talents, diversity,
and productivity of its membership, as above referenced.
RECOMMENDATION(S): As the Board decides.
