This information is submitted for your review and
presentation to the Board of Education at the meeting on August 20,
1998.
The Chapel Hill- Carrboro City School system has provided services for its
Limited English Proficient (LEP) student population for more than twenty
years. Over the past ten years, this population of students has increased
tremendously in the school district and across North Carolina. With the
growing educational needs of the system's LEP student population, the
increasing number of languages represented (62 plus), the challenges that
educators face in serving this segment of the student population, and the
needs of LEP students, the district administration, with School Board
support, is submitting a proposal for the establishment of a Task Force on
Educational Services for Limited English Proficient Students.
This task force will have the responsibility of closely examining the present
services offered by the school system for LEP students, considering
instructional delivery models and identifying resources. The committee
also will receive feedback from the community and educators on the
educational needs of LEP students, look at translation needs, review
professional development programs and training opportunities for
mainstream teachers and administrators, and present its findings and
recommendations to members of the Board of Education for consideration
and implementation.
ff
