This
information is submitted for your review and presentation to the Board of
Education at the meeting on August 20, 1998.
Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools' alternative school, Phoenix Academy,
welcomed students in February 1998. The school served twelve middle and high
school students. Dr. Mimi Chapman of the UNC -CH School of Social Work
designed and conducted an evaluation of the program. The evaluation consisted
of three components. The first is the School Success Profile -OL (SSP -OL) which
measures strengths and weaknesses in life areas known to impact school
performance. The second component is an archival analysis of student
performance and the third included a series of interviews with the school staff,
administrators, parents, students, and selected Lincoln Center employees.
Dr. Chapman found improvement in students' absenteeism and school
performance. Interviews indicate that the alternative school staff is committed
and has implemented a program that students and parents find to be valuable
and are willing to invest in its continued success. As the program expands, on-
going communication with parents and the home schools needs to continue.
Individual plans for students to transition to their home schools or other..
educational settings will need to be developed.
a
