supervise. Outside of Cabinet, I have been supported extensively by every other coordinator or
director. I am located at McDougle Elementary with ready access to Steve Scroggs and Charley
Stewart and have met almost every week with Dave Thaden. These principals have the expertise
and experience of opening a school and have been willing to share that information.
An external support system is being planned. One of the features that the Edison model
offered its schools was a group of individuals who knew schools and the research about good
schooling. Our central office offers support in a variety of ways but does not spend a major
portion of its time looking at research. We envision this external group consisting of university
personnel closely associated with current research about how change takes place in schools as well
as about curriculum issues. They would also help us develop methods of measuring progress
towards our goals.
Working with the development of this model has been a remarkable professional
opportunity and, with the Board's approval of the refinements, I am ready to begin meeting with
elementary schools to share the model!
