ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 15, 2010
Action Agenda
Item No._
SUBJECT: Acceptance of Funds To Continue Evening/Weekend Hours at Two Senior
Centers
DEPARTMENT: Aging PUBLIC HEARING: (Y /N) NO
ATTACHMENT(S):
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Jerry M. Passmore, Aging Director,
245 -2000
Janice Tyler, Senior Centers
Administrator, 245 -2000
PURPOSE: To approve the acceptance of funds from the Friends of the Robert and Pearl
Seymour Center and from the Friends of the Senior Center for Central Orange during FY2010-
11 to maintain after hours service at the two senior centers by employing non - permanent staff.
BACKGROUND: In order to reduce expenses in the FY2010 -2011 budget, the Department on
Aging recommended that the Central Orange and Seymour Centers hours of operation be
limited to normal County business hours from 8:00 -5:00 p.m. This eliminates the funding for an
evening Facility Manager position for four evenings per week (shared between the two facilities)
and some Saturday hours of operation at the Seymour Center.
In anticipation of this reduction in service with the Board of County Commissioners' adoption of
the FY2010 -11 budget, the boards of both Friends organizations have met and pledged
financial support to reimburse the Department on Aging for non - permanent personnel to
continue two evenings (5 -9 p.m.) per week at Central Orange and two evenings (5 -9 p.m.) and
some Saturday hours (9 a.m. -1 p.m.) at the Seymour Center.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The Friends of the Seymour Center have committed $8,000 and the
Friends of Central Orange have budgeted $6,000 for the non - permanent personnel. No County
funds will be used for these additional hours of operation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the following:
(1) Accept the funds during FY2010 -11 from the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour
Center to employ a non - permanent employee to provide hours two evenings per week
and some Saturday hours; and
(2) Accept the funds during FY2010 -11 from the Friends of the Senior Center for Central
Orange to provide hours two evenings per week.
Staff will include this item in the first budget amendment for FY2010 -11 to budget the funds in
the Department on Aging's Community Based Services account.
