Outside Agency Descriptions - continued <br />• Cornucopia House <br />Did not request funding in FY 2010 -11. <br />Disability Awareness Council <br />$0 <br />$2,500 <br />The Orange County Disability Awareness Council offers educational and advocacy projects to <br />promote opportunities for persons with disabilities to work and live in an environment free of <br />architectural, attitudinal, economic, structural, and societal barriers. <br />Dispute Settlement Center <br />$16,000 <br />This agency promotes and brings about peaceful settlement of disputes and prevents the <br />escalation of conflict through mediation, facilitation, conciliation, and training. This agency <br />receives a county match through the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) program. <br />Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws $0 <br />Eyes Ears Nose and Paws harnesses the unique strengths of canine partnerships with people <br />to improve lives. The agency trains and places assistance dogs with individuals with disabilities, <br />and provide ongoing placement support for clients. Service Dogs help individuals with mobility <br />impairments. Diabetic Assistance Dogs help with individuals with insulin- dependent diabetes. <br />El Centro Hispano * $10,000 <br />El Centro Hispano is a grassroots community -based organization dedicated to strengthening the <br />Latino community and improving the quality of life of Latino residents in Durham, North Carolina, <br />is and the surrounding area. With the opening of the Carrboro office of El Centro Hispano, this <br />mission will be able to include Orange County, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro. <br />• <br />El Centro Latino $0 <br />Agency closed in November 2009. <br />Duke HomeCare and Hospice $0 <br />This grant will serve the terminally ill and their families in Orange County. The Hospice provides <br />medical, psychosocial, spiritual and bereavement care for the terminally ill and their loved ones. <br />El Futuro <br />$20,000 <br />El Futuro addresses the behavioral health needs of North Carolina's Latino community by <br />promoting behavioral health awareness, enhancing existing services, and developing a model <br />clinic. <br />EmPOWERment, Inc. $13,000 <br />The mission of EmPOWERment, Inc. is to emPOWER people and communities to control their <br />own destinies through affordable housing, advocacy, community organizing and grassroots <br />economic development. <br />" Agencies denoted with an asterisk are new requests in FY 2010 -11. <br />3 <br />
