• Outside Agency Descriptions <br />A Helping Hand $4,000 <br />This agency enables senior citizens to live independently, maintain high levels of wellness and <br />.avoid institutionalized care. Services provided by A Helping Hand include transportation to the <br />doctor, assistance with shopping for nutritious food and preparing healthy meals, assistance <br />with business correspondence, and light housekeeping for a clean and safe home environment. <br />Adolescents in Need $0 <br />This agency serves Orange County School District teens (grades 6 through 12 and those not in <br />school). The focus is primarily on those youths that are considered at -risk of early sexual <br />involvement, substance abuse, defiant behavior and physical or sexual abuse due to home, <br />family or other social surroundings. <br />Alliance of AIDS Services $2,500 <br />This agency operates two family care homes for low- income people living with HIV /AIDS, six of <br />whom currently live at the Orange Community Residence ( "Orange House ") in Carrboro. This <br />grant will assist the Alliance in providing the proper nutrition and medication needed for the six <br />residents in the Orange House. <br />American Red Cross $ 0 <br />• The American Red Cross, Orange County Chapter provides Disaster Services, Health and <br />Safety Services and Blood Services to the citizens of Orange County. Each year, the Orange <br />County Chapter responds immediately to over 75 local emergencies, including house or <br />apartment fires. Disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster - <br />caused needs. <br />Autism Society of North Carolina, Parent Advocates * $0 <br />The primary. focus of the organization has and continues to be advocacy for individuals and <br />families, and ongoing education of the public about the needs of the autism community. Since <br />Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong disorder, _ the organization works with families, <br />professionals, providers, and policy makers to ensure that needed services and options are <br />available throughout the life -span of people on the spectrum. <br />Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle $0 <br />Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Triangle offers two services, community -based and <br />school -based mentoring. Community -based mentoring provides mentors for children from <br />single parent homes or other children in need of adult mentors. These "Big Brothers and Big <br />Sisters" play an integral role in the lives of their "Littles" by being good listeners and guiding <br />these children in the right direction. <br />Boys and Girls Club of Eastern Piedmont * $0 <br />Boys and Girls club provides Orange County school age children and youth especially from <br />• challenging circumstances, with a professionally supervised, consistent environment where they <br />are safe, equally accepted and able to participate in goal oriented programs that enhance their <br />self esteem and assist them to achieve their full potential. <br />Amounts listed are the County Manager's Recommendation.
