In the context of this document, goals are interpreted to mean beofd; <br />brief statements of intent that provide a focus or vision for planning. Goals are non -sp <br />non - measurable, and usually cannot be attained (San Francisco Department of Public Health, <br />2000 ). Objectives are meant to be realistic targets. SMART is an acronym that stands for <br />specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time - framed objectives. Further explanations of <br />these components are below. <br />Specific: What exactly are we going to do? With or for whom? <br />Meade: In the ideal world is it measurable? In our world, is it measurable? <br />Achievable: evable: Can it be done in the given timeframe / political climate / budget? <br />Relevant: Will this objective lead to the desired result? <br />Tim__ e_ framed: By what specific date will we achieve the objective? <br />The SMART acronym is used in setting process, impact and outcome objectives. <br />Process_ obLe ivies tell what you are doing and how you will do it. For example, by <br />December 2012, at least 10 Orange County residents will graduate from Durham Tech's <br />brownfields environmental technology job training program (Milliken, 2009 ). <br />Impact__ objectyes tell how you will change a knowledge or behavior in the short term. <br />For example, graduates of the program will be able to identify the components of <br />HAZWOPER and PPE. <br />Outcom__e ob= ctives tell the long -term implications of the program or action. For <br />example, by 2015, there will be a 20% increase in Orange County residents who work in <br />green technologies. <br />10 <br />
