34 ATTACHMENT #3 North Carolina DIGITAL HERITAGE CENTER 23 March 2010 Barbaza Baker 6 Crestbury Court Durham, NC 27713 Dear Ms. Baker: I enjoyed meeting with you and the group working on the Orange County. Heritage Center. I think it sounds like an exciting and important project and 1 was glad to have the opportunity to learn more about it. I am working with a new program called the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, which is based in the North Carolina Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill. We will be working with cultural heritage institutions across the state to help them share selected materials from their collections online. As one of our pilot projects, we will present some materials from the Orange County Historical Museum (probably around 40 to 50 items). I met with Darcie Martin about this a few weeks ago, and she and her colleagues are going to choose a handful of representative materials from the collection to be digitized and displayed online. Beyond the initial pilot projects, I'm afraid I can't yet be specific about how many projects we will be working on and how the projects will be selected, Our advisory board will meet for the first time in May and we will begin to work out many of these issues. Criteria for new projects will be posted on our website as soon as it is available. The Digital Heritage Center bas a statewide mission and will seek to work with collections throughout North Carolina, I can say for certain that we will be available to consult with cultural heritage institutions in Orange County about digital projects.
