Chapter 9: Transportation Element <br />.,. <br />2 ^ Long-Range Transportation Plan. The plan is a guide for major transportation <br />3 investments in the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning <br />4 Organization area. It is designed to support land use and air quality goals for <br />5 the urban area, and is prepared in accordance with federal requirements. The <br />6 plan projects the amount and type of transportation demand over a 20-year <br />7 minimum period, and is updated every four years to <br />8 demonstrate compliance with air quality standards. It <br />9 identifies priority highway, bus transit, rail transit, bicycle, and pedestrian <br />10 improvements needed to service future populations, and the projected costs of <br />11 these improvements. Every two years, the Metropolitan <br />3o Planning Organization develops a prioritizeaf list of <br />31 protects to be considered for funding in the biennial <br />32 update of the Metropolitan Transportation Improvement <br />33 Program.
