30 <br /> s <br /> The Board expressed concern over .the number of unpaved <br /> 5e miles in Orange County and noted that the Department of Trans- <br /> 6. portation planned to spend $101,249 (including contingency) for <br /> strengthening paved roads. Mr. Watkins said the decision for <br /> 8. selecting roads to be strengthened was strictly judgmental on <br /> the part of DOT. Commissioner Walker said the paved roads should <br /> 10. not be allowed to fall into disrepair. <br /> 11. Commissioner Whitted moved; seconded by Commissioner Willhoit,. <br /> 12. "that the Department of Transportation be requested to consider <br /> 3-3- substituting unpaved roads for the proposed paved Secondary Road <br /> 14. Improvements using the point .system list as far as the.money <br /> 15. wi'll .go .and to-improve the spot improvements and the. paving of <br /> 16. unpaved::.roads ,as .they are proposed." Vote: Ayes, 4 (Commissioners <br /> 17. Barnes, Gustaveson, Whitted and Willhoit) ; noes, 1 (Commissioner <br /> lg. Walker) . <br /> 19. Commissioner Anne Barnes asked those in the audience who <br /> 20. wished to speak regarding the Department of Transportation's <br /> Proposed Secondary Road Program for 1981-82 to do so at this <br /> 'cam time. <br /> 23. Dr. Charles Blake: Was opposed to the cutting of vegetation <br /> 24. along the road to prevent frost on the highway; he also was . <br /> 25. critical of the DOT's failure to properly maintain culverts, <br /> 26. mentioning an area along Faucett Mill Road in particular. <br /> 27. There were no other citizens who wished to .address the <br /> 28. Board regarding the Department of Transportation; Commissioner <br /> 29. Barnes declared this portion of the Public hearing closed. <br /> 30. Agenda. Item 4:. Abandonment of SR 1569 <br /> 31. This item was returned from the October 5th agenda; the Board <br /> 32. raised questions regarding the maintenance of the road which is <br /> "3 within the Eno State .Park and also the absence of the accompanying <br /> petition requesting abandonment. Mr. Watkins of the DOT said <br /> 35- the road (Cole Mill Road) will continue to .be a public road up <br /> 36. to the point where the Eno State Park begins; he understands that <br /> 37. the State Park Service will install a gate at that point and maintain <br /> 38. <br /> 39. <br /> 40. <br />
