The purpose of this meeting was to receive input from the County
Commissioners on meeting space and other space needs in the proposed Southern
Human Services Building.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Moses Carey, Jr., and Commissioners
Alice M. Gordon, Stephen H. Halkiotis, Verla C. Insko and Don Willhoit.
COUNTY ATTORNEY PRESENT: Geoffrey Gledhill
COUNTY STAFF PRESENT: County Manager John M. Link, Jr., Assistant
County Managers Albert Kittrell and Rod Visser, Clerk to the Board Beverly A.
Blythe and Purchasing Director Pam Jones.
MEETING ROOM IN THE NEW SOUTHERN HUMAN SERVICES COMPLEX
Architects from Haken and Coley presented a layout of the Southern Human
Services Building showing all the groups which will be using the facility.
They stated that they have had a request of 36,000 sq.ft. from all the user
groups. The multi-purpose room which could be used for a County Commissioners
meeting room would be 2, 000 to 2, 500 sq. ft. with a flat floor. This room would
also be used for the nutrition groups and other meetings. All areas are
secured at night leaving the meeting room open.
It was the consensus of the Board to wire the room for cable. They
decided after a brief discussion not to have a dedicated office for the County
Commissioners. Commissioner Gordon expressed her desire to have a decent place
for the County Commissioners to meet with citizens. The architect will look
at the shared space to see if one can be used for that purpose as well as house
file cabinets. When it is not being used by a County Commissioner it could be
used by others as a conference room.
The Board agreed to a permanent seating arrangement with permanent audio
visual capabilities and a permanent microphone system.
The Board talked about having a common intake area. They would like to
have as much central intake as possible. Pam Jones indicated they would take
that into consideration.
With no further items to discuss, Chair Carey adjourned the Special
Meeting. The next meeting will be held this same day at 7:30 p.m. in the
courtroom of the Old Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Moses Carey, Jr., Chair
Beverly A.
