C0~ <br />.._.... <br />~; <br />Y <br />Ms. Henrietta Auman: Noted the number of visitors to the h1useum in <br />the past month and asked the Board of Commissioners to renovate the down- <br />stairs courtroom. She asked that the Board not disturb the huseum's pre- <br />sent location. <br />s <br />0 <br />i <br />Mr. Lunsford Long, President of the .Orange County Bar Association and <br />speaking for that group: Noted the inadequacy of the court facilities in <br />Orange County and urged the Board to supply the additional roam for Court. <br />He reminded the Board,that the State mandates the Counties to Supply space <br />for court facilities. Mr. Long reviewed the present Courts' meeting schedule <br />and the number of cases heard in one year. He emphasized the need for space, <br />privacy and quiet in which to conduct proceedings. <br />Ms. Betty Eidenier: Said that the Old Courthouse had forced the same <br />complaints in her father's time that she heard the attorneys saying tonight, <br />i.e, it would be noisy too. She suggested the third floor of the present <br />Courthouse be renovated as additional court space. She voiced fears that <br />the Museum would disband if forced to seek other shelter for its treasures. <br />Judge Stanley Peele: Emphasized the need for appropriate quarters <br />_.:,• court proceedings.. He said it was noisy, too small and disgraceful <br />in the courtroom downstairs. He cited the need for at least three addition- <br />al courtrooms. <br />Ms. Josephine Barbour: She questioned the cost of the renovation oi' <br />*.he Old Courthouse and its structural soundness. She suggested a new <br />°••ilding or renovation of some of the schools. <br />qtr. Fox, the Assistant pistrict Attorney: Said the citizens were <br />talKinn as though it were a question of either the Museum or court <br />F•~cilities. +le said it didn't have to be a question of either or; at <br />present the use of the Old Courthouse as a Museum underutilized that <br />facility. He said it was not a question of whether Orange County needed <br />a Courtroom but where. <br />hir. haul Carr: He suggested the Board seek other alternatives since <br />the County, according to Mayor Cates, doesn't Darn the Old Courthouse. He <br />contended it would require too much renovation to make the Old Courthouse <br />acceptable as a courtroom again. <br />Or. Robert Murphy: Also suggested the Board seek another location <br />
