She feels that if a vote is taken that maybe only <br />three sites will be approved for a full geotechnical investigation which <br />would mean a savings of $20, 000 to $30, 000. She asked that the Commissioners <br />get involved now in the landfill search process to ensure that the <br />unblemished integrity of the citizen search process is maintained. <br />John Hartwell asked that the County Commissioners get back into <br />the drivers seat and take charge of the Site Search Committee which has been <br />badly derailed. He feels the Board of County Commissioners should be setting <br />the policies and giving direction to the LOG. There is a hugh cross-section <br />of the population in attendance tonight and they understand that times have <br />changed and people cannot continue to dispose of-their trash the old way. <br />He asked that the Board take leadership in this process. <br />Robert Ferguson read a prepared statement which was addressed to <br />"All Media and all concerned Orange County Citizens." In summary he feels <br />that the LOG misinformed members of the LSC in regards to the proxy vote of <br />Bryant Walker. He stated that the citizens of Orange County are calling for <br />a revote of the LSC's decision to drill all four sites. He also does not <br />support lowering the tipping fee for the UNC ash. <br />David Laul read a press release, dated May 4, 1992 with a caption <br />which read "Citizens Against Site Eleven". In summary the press .release <br />demanded a revote on the decision to drill all four landfill sites. The <br />press release also demanded that the County Commissioners pass a resolution <br />that would prohibit the use of Orange- County's Landfill for waste from <br />outside the County. He stated that the citizens of rural Orange County have <br />insufficient representation in County government and feel that solid waste <br />policy is being set by the Chapel Hill Public Works Department behind closed <br />doors. <br />Commissioner Halkiotis reiterated that he voted against lowering <br />the fee for the disposal of ash. He feels the most important thing now is <br />recycling. He feels Orange County can recycle 51~ and must continue working <br />toward this goal. <br />PUBLIC CB:ARGE <br />Chair Carey dispensed with the reading of the Public Charge. <br />III.
