Ms. Jennifer Powell, Ms. Sally Bernard, and Ms. Sharmane Miner requested the Board consider favorably the funding requests of the women's Health Counseling Service. Ms. Alice Straus, Volunteer for Rape Crisis Center, read a letter from a rape victim served by the Rape Crisis Center and requested the Board consider funding this worthwhile agency. Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board member Ed Caldwell, spoke in favor of the district tax and discussed problems brought about by inflation and mandated services with no accompanying funds. Ms. Ellen Scouten, Assistant District Attorney, and Deputy Sheriff David Hughes, spoke to the valuable services rendered by the Rape Crisis Center and the importance of these services in the judicial system. Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board member Verla Insko thanked the Board for its continued support of public education in Orange County. She spoke to the per pupil allocation. and expressed her desire not to see programs cut. Ms. Joy Williams, teacher in Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools, requested the Commissioners consider funding the schools at the highest possible level. Ms. Majorie Hill spoke in favor of more fully funding the I. Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County Schools and spoke in favor of supplemental tax.
