identifies a number of important Natural Heritage sites, among them Sevenmile <br />Creek Sugar Maple Bottom and Crabtree Creek Monadnock Ridge. <br />Sevenmile Creek Sugar Maple Bottom is the richest combination of bottomland <br />and deciduous forest remaining in the county, and deemed of state significance. <br />The area supports regionally rare plant species, state - listed plants, and state listed <br />aquatic species. The expansive Crabtree Creek Monadnock Ridge is part of an <br />important "wildlife reservoir" with optimal habitat for turkey, bobcat, deer, and other <br />upland game animals. The ridge is an important link in an overland wooded corridor <br />connecting the Cape Fear (Haw) and Neuse (Eno) River systems. <br />Finally, Orange County has a long -term vision of establishing a Seven Mile Creek <br />Preserve. The County purchased 160 acres in the 1970s (for watershed <br />protection) and another 134 acres in 2001 to establish the nature preserve. The <br />County recently acquired another 13 acres adjacent to historic Moorefields for a <br />future public gateway into the Preserve and access to the planned North Carolina <br />Mountains -to -Sea Trail, which would travel through this area.
