MINUTES
ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
JANUARY 15, 1980
The Orange County Board of Commissioners met in regular session on
Tuesday, January 15, 1980, at 7:30 p.m., in the Superior Courtroom, Orange
County Courthouse, in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Commissioners present: Commissioner Richard Whitted, Chairman, and
Commissioners Norman Walker, Norman Gustaveson, Anne Barnes and Don Willhoit.
The Chairman called for a public hearing to convene concerning the
naming of certain public roads in Orange County.
Mr. John Forrest, Chairman of the Orange County Road Naming.Advisory
Committee, gave some background information concerning the efforts of the
Road Naming Advisory Committee and presented the Board with a listing of
recommended road names for various Orange County roads. For copy of this
listing, see page 190 of this book.
Mr. Forrest requested the name Shelton Road (#1560) be deleted from
the list since he had received a petition concerning the naming of this road.
Chairman Whitted told persons in the audience that petitions to change
road names were available and if there were objections to the recommended names,
those names could be deleted. Chairman Whitted opened the floor to public
comment.
Reverend Steve Compton, speaking on behalf of the members of the Chestnut
Ridge Methodist Church, requested road # 1125 be named Chestnut Ridge Church
Road.
Mr. Dave Shanklin, member of the Road Naming Advisory Committee, said
the committee had left off the word church due to the size of the road sign.
Mr. Forrest said he did not believe the committee would have any objections to
adding the word church to the road name.
Reverend Compton said he did not object to the use of abbreviations on
the sign itself.
Mr. Arch McAdoo requested road #1378 be named Oak Street. He pointed
out road # 1325 is listed as Oak Street in the Committee's recommendations.
Mr. Doug Efland, member of the Road Naming Advisory Committee, explained
road # 1325 was named Oak Street after researching property deeds along
the road.
