..:`~ <br />MINUTES <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />AUGUST 28, 1979 <br />-- _ Ths Orange County Board of Commissioners met in special session <br />~ on Tuesday, August 28, 1979, at 7:30 p.m., in the Commissioners Room, of <br />. the Orange County Courthouse, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. <br />Commissioners present: Commissioner Richard Whitted, Chairman, <br />and Commissioners Norman Walker, Anne Barnes and Don Willhoit. Commissioner <br />Norman Gustaveson was absent. <br />The following items were added to the agenda: <br />Agenda Item 8: Discussion of Se tember 5th A enda <br />Agenda Item 9: Announcement <br />Agenda Item 3: Review by Department,,,of Transportation <br />Mr. Tom Hepler, Planner for the Department of Transportation, <br />introduced Mr. Jim Graham, Mr. Tom Peacock, Mr. Nate Wilson and Mr. Steve <br />Worth from the Department of Transportation. Mr. Hepler explained that <br />+' the Department of Transportation had proposed widening of 1-85 from <br />four to six lanes from Guilford County to the Orange-Durham County line, <br />a total length of 41 miles and a total cost of $129,000,OOp. He said <br />the Federal Highway Administration has approved the concept of widening <br />15 feet on the outside of the existing roadway establishing a 46 foot <br />median. He said the justification for widening was made on the basis <br />of traffic demand and continuity of the interstate. He presented maps <br />which showed the proposed changes to the interstate, interchanges and <br />some secondary roads. He estimated project completion date to be <br />fiscal year 1985. For copy of a map of the proposed project, see page 4 of <br />this book. <br />He announced there would be an open house on Thursday, <br />:.: October 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 and beginning again at 6:00 p.m., in the <br />~"~ Commissioners Room of the Orange County Courthouse to give the public <br />an opportunity to ask questions and to make comments about the project <br />which could be incorporated in the planning studies. He said a public <br />hearing on the project would probably be held in February to review <br />comments from state and federal agencies and the general public. He <br />said an environmental report and design hearing maps would be presented <br />at that time. <br />
