8 <br />PLANNING TECHNICIAN <br />MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE <br />Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate of Arts (AA) or <br />Associate of Science (AS) degree in planning or urban studies, or closely related field and two <br />years experience in property development, real estate, or related filed. Local government <br />planning experience preferred. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license <br />issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED <br />TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS <br />Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and <br />equipment including a computer, calculator, telephone, copier, etc. Must be able to exert up to <br />five pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to <br />lift, carry, push, pull or othenivise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, <br />but may involve walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights <br />of five to ten pounds. <br />Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable <br />functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious <br />standards) of data, people or things. <br />Interpersonal Communications: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to <br />convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from <br />supervisor. <br />Language Ability: Requires ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, <br />construction drawings, plats, technical and statistical reports, etc. Requires the ability to prepare <br />correspondence with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. <br />Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence. <br />Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out <br />instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving <br />several concrete variable in or from standardized situations. Requires the ability to make routine <br />independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to <br />primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information and <br />to understand and implement basic computer and office machinery functions. <br />Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to <br />follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a <br />variety of technical or professional languages including engineering, legal, and tax terminology. <br />Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; <br />multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; understand and apply the theories of algebra, <br />geometry, trigonometry, and statistical inference. <br />Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape. <br />
