the NRHP. A detailed assessment of the project's potential effect on the NRHP - eligible Nunn House
(OR434) or other potentially significant historic structures in the vicinity is beyond the scope of this
project, but given the overall project setting, with proper design the project is considered unlikely to
adversely affect any such properties.
Information on the potential for prehistoric sites on the property is provided by a predictive model created
by I. Randolph Daniel (1994) as part of his archaeological survey of Orange County. In his work, Daniel
(1994:93 -94) found that prehistoric archaeological sites in the New Hope Creek drainage are located
primarily on terraces and ridges near fertile bottomlands along major tributaries. Daniel (1994:95 -96)
created a predictive model of site distribution, and divided the county into three zones. Zone I represents
areas of high probability for site occurrence, and includes all inhabitable parts of river floodplains and the
bottomlands of major creek drainages as well as the adjacent terraces and ridges. Zone II (moderate
probability) includes areas within 1 km of the main drainage channels, excluding bottomlands and the
immediately bordering terraces and ridges. Zone III (low probability) includes upland areas not defined
by Zone I and II (i.e. the remainder of the county). The current project tract falls along the boundary of
Zone II and III, with New Hope Creek located 2 km north of the project tract, and the main channel of
Old Field Creek approximately 0.6 km to the southeast. The field reconnaissance confirmed this general
assessment of the property as having low- moderate potential for prehistoric archaeological sites.
Although a shallow intermittent drainage appears to have formerly crossed the project tract, it was
probably not a major focus for prehistoric populations. Consequently, is considered unlikely that
significant prehistoric archaeological resources exist on the project tract.
The available map and historic evidence provide no indications that structures were formerly present on
the property. Although the tract was formerly part of the Blackwood family holdings, there are no
indications that it was ever used for non - agricultural purposes. For those reasons, is considered unlikely
that significant historic period archaeological sites, or historical resources associated with the Rogers -
Eubanks Community, are present on the property.
In summary, based on the available evidence it is TRC's opinion that development of this property is
unlikely to impact any significant cultural resources.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at (919) 530 -8446, or via email at holson(a-),tresolutions.com, if you
would like additional information, or have any questions or comments about this report.
Sincerely, )}
Heather L. Olson, M.A., RPA
Archaeologist
rol
