term habitation site) be subjected to further subsurface testing, but it is not clear if that was ever
accomplished.
A fifth site, the Alexander Hogan Plantation Site (31OR296), was identified during an archaeological
survey of portions of Orange County conducted by I. Randolph Daniel in 1993 and 1994. This site
contains the stone foundations of two large outbuildings and a large cemetery (or two associated
cemeteries) consisting of small fieldstones, with some set within a small stone -lined enclosure and the
remainder located to the north and outside of the enclosure (Daniel 1994:80). The graves are believed to
be associated with the Alexander Hogan plantation, dating to the mid- to late -19t` century. Subsequent
investigation identified two more stone foundations and chimney rubble associated with the main house
(Daniel and Vujic 1995). The property was listed to the NRHP in March 1996.
Site 31 OR520 is a small prehistoric lithic scatter identified during a Phase I archaeological survey for the
proposed expansion of the Orange County Landfill (Joy and Becker 1999). The artifacts were found to be
in a disturbed context and no further investigation was warranted.
In 2000, TRC conducted a cultural resource survey for the Greene Tract, then slated for development by
the Town of Chapel Hill Department of Solid Waste Management (Millis 2000). Two sites identified by
that project are located within a one -mile radius of the proposed transfer station- 31OR522, a Late
Archaic lithic scatter, and 31OR529, a prehistoric isolated lithic find. Both sites were determined
ineligible for the NRHP.
Site 31OR609 was identified during the 2007 survey for the proposed Orange County Animal Shelter
conducted by ESI, Inc. (site form on file, NC Office of State Archaeology). The site consists of a single
prehistoric lithic flake and has been determined ineligible for the NRHP.
Table 1 Previously recorded archaeological sites within one mile of the project area.
Site No Description NRHP Eligibility Reference
31OR185 Late Archaic short term habitation Eligible.
