The tract (Orange County PIN 9871607301) is located on the west side of Mill
House Road in Chapel Hill, at the northeast corner of the existing Eubanks Landfill site (Figure 1), and
was purchased by Orange County from David Paydarfar in 2007.
For purposes of the literature review, the area examined included a one -mile radius around the project
tract. Research was conducted on September 11, 2009 at the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology
(OSA), and the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), Survey and Planning Branch.
The research included a review of maps and site files at the OSA for archaeological sites listed in or
eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and a review of maps, survey
records and architectural history books relating to Orange County at the SHPO. Historic maps and online
historical documents were also consulted.
On September 14, 2009 TRC staff visited the project area to visually examine the project tract. The
project area is lightly wooded with areas of secondary undergrowth. TRC staff walked the property in
four parallel transects (from east to west) in order to examine site conditions, document extant structural
remains, and assess the potential for significant cultural resources on the property.
RESULTS
Literature Review
Archaeological Sites. A review of the files and records at the OSA revealed that there are no previously
recorded archaeological sites on the property, although, nine previously recorded sites are located within a
1 -mile radius (Table 1). Four of those sites (31OR185- 31OR188) were identified during the cultural
resource reconnaissance survey for the I -40 Extension project in Durham and Orange Counties (McCabe
et al. 1978). McCabe et al. (1978) recommended that one of the sites (31OR185, a Late Archaic short
