26
Projects still in the germination stage include the continued pursuit of grants to
install solar on government buildings, development of a program to provide solar
options for the agricultural community, and the evaluation of a solar technician
apprenticeship program for community college students.
Soil and Water Conservation District
Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District staff acquired a Truax No-
Till drive through a Soil and Water Foundation Grant which conserves fuel for
farmers and works toward carbon sequestration.
ERCD
The Environment and Resource Conservation Department recently completed
the State of the Environment Report 2009. Work is underway on landowner
seminars on forest stewardship and private land conservation opportunities and
programs.
BOCC
Biodegradable utensils are now being used when meals are served for BOCC
meetings; Styrofoam is no longer being used. Water is provided in pitchers and
not individual plastic bottles.
Multi-Departmental -Stimulus Funds
Although the pace of the release of stimulus funds has been much slower than
anticipated and Orange County has not been eligible for several renewable
energy grants, a grant has been submitted to the NC Energy Office to provide
solar installations on the County Jail, and two middle schools-Stanford and
McDougle. Additional opportunities to use stimulus funds for solar installations
are anticipated, including a plan to develop two solar certification programs in
conjunction with Durham Tech.
