Local Interest Toward Solvin the Water ualit Problems and How That
Level of nterest Was Determine
The Orange Conservation District held a Resource Conservation Act (RCA)
public meeting on August 28; 197$, at which time all environmental concerns
were discussed freely. This statement was made concerning water_quality: "What
conservation practices we install on our land determines the quality and quantity
of our water. We need to control our livestock waste, pesticides, herbicides,
and other pollutants to keep our water quality high." All local agencies
were involved in this public meeting and we feel much was accomplished. We
intend to follow up with additional public meetings. At this meeting we.
discussed the Back Creek Reservoir Watershed Critical Area Treatment Project
and received favorable comments. We explained that this project is the fore-
-- runner.of the 208 State plan. In addition, we have held two other public meetings
- to explain the Back Creek Project. These were held in the community buildings
at Cheeks Township and, Cedar Grave Township.
10. Most of the sediment in the watershed is produced
by critically eroding roadsides and cropland that have excessive soil loss.
Overgrazed pasture and poor silvicultural practices also contribute to the
__ sediment production.
