~D~`~ <br />i <br />Mr. Oscar Compton, Chairman of the Orange County Board of Educatian, <br />said he favored no change that would reduce the Orange County School Board's <br />involvement in the selection process of ABC Board members. He also spoke <br />in opposition to enlarging the Board from three to five members. <br />Mr. Edwin Caldwell, of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board, felt <br />the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board should be involved in the selection <br />of ABC Board members. ' <br />Ms. Sharlene Pilkey spoke in favor of enlarging the ABC Board membership <br />from three to five. <br />Mr. Max Kennedy, member of the Orange County Board of Education, spoke <br />in opposition to changing the appointment process to the ABC Board. <br />Mr. Terry Fuqua spoke in opposition to increasing the ABG Board member- <br />sh p from three to five. <br />Mr. David Hinds spoke in favor of enlarging the ABC Board from three <br />to five members. He felt, if one school board appointed members, all <br />school boards should have equal appointment power; but, he was nat apposed <br />to the County Commissioners making all appointments. <br />Mr. Jack Martin said he would like to continue the current method <br />of selecting ABC Board members. <br />Mrs. Josephine Barbour questioned the necessity of changing the <br />method of appointments to the ABC Board or increasing the size. She said <br />she saw nothing wrong with the old system. <br />An unidentified individual asked whether the Board had contacted <br />the legislative delegation about this item. <br />Mr. Tany Saber inquired whether the Board had taken action on this <br />item. <br />Mr. Ben. Lloyd questioned the reasoning behind wanting to change the <br />method of appointing ABC Board members. <br />Commissioner Whitted asked Mr. Gobbel, Chairman of the ABC Board, <br />whether he wished to address the Board of Commissioners. Mr. Gobbel said <br />that he did not. <br />There being no further comments on enlarging the ABC Board or on <br />changing the method of appointment of ABC Board members, the public hearing <br />was concluded. <br />
